This 'Stranger Things' Fan Has A Tragic Theory About Dustin's Dad
This article contains some minor spoilers from season two of ‘Stranger Things’. We’re not giving anything big away, but if you really don’t want to know anything at all, maybe best that you skedaddle.
Over two seasons of ‘Stranger Things’, we’ve come to know the families of Will, Mike, Lucas and Dustin.
Will’s mum Joyce (Winona Ryder) and brother Jonathan (Charlie Heaton) have played a large role in the show, as has Mike’s older sister Nancy (Natalia Dyer). We’ve seen a fair amount of Mike and Nancy’s parents (what with a lot of season one being set at their house), and in Stranger Things 2, we’ve been properly introduced to Lucas’s mum and dad (and legendary sister Erica) as well.
This most recent season has also seen us learn a little more about Dustin. It transpires that he’s an only child, and lives alone with his mum (Catherine Curtin, from Orange is the New Black), his cat and his tortoise.
Some fans have started to wonder, now that we know a little more about Dustin’s living arrangements, what became of his dad. Is he out of the picture, like Will and Jonathan’s dad Lonnie? Or is the truth a little more tragic?
One Redditor has suggested that Dustin’s dad may actually have died:
“While I was watching season 2, I couldn’t help but think about Dustin’s parents. More specifically, I’ve been thinking about Dustin’s dad, and I’ve come to the conclusion that he’s dead. I’m not sure how, I’m not sure when, but I’m pretty sure Papa Henderson isn’t around anymore.
We’ve seen all of the boys’ dads except for Dustin’s. Hell, even Will and Jonathan’s abusive, deadbeat dickhead of a father showed up last season. But not only do we not meet Dustin’s dad, there’s not even a mention of him.
One of the only fictional dad tropes that hasn’t been shown is the dead dad, and I think that’s where Mr Henderson comes in. I think it might have happened when Dustin was pretty young. He’s not openly grieving in either season and again he’s not mentioned, which I think rules out a recent death.”
The theory goes on to point out that if Dustin has lost his father, it might explain why he often forms such strong bonds with older, male role models.
He’s seen to have a close relationship with his science teacher, Mr. Clarke, and in season two he gets into a bromance with none other than Steve Harrington, who offers him advice on girls.
It’s making fans very emotional:

Dustin doesn't have a dad or siblings and Steve maybe doesn't either, this is one of the most needed relationships, right on Duffer brothers

Steve was the strong male influence Dustin never had. Thats why Dustin is so quick to trust in his advice.

It makes their whole bromance even more moving, which we hadn’t even realised was possible.
i just want a spin-off show of dustin and steve as brothers doing regular normal brotherly things

We’re guessing that we’ll learn what happened to Dustin’s dad at some point, hopeful in season three of Stranger Things…
We’re counting down the days already.
