Spyro Is Finally Coming Back To Playstation
When I was little, the only two video games that I never had but really wanted to play were Crash Bandicoot and Spyro. I don’t know why I didn’t have them, to be honest. I suppose it never occurred to me to ask for them for Christmas or my birthday? I was quite stupid, on reflection.
No, instead I had to wait for the one day every month where my friend Malcolm invited me round to his house and then hope for the combination of his older brother not using the PlayStation, his big dog who I was scared of not being in the room, and Malcolm himself having not played the games so much that he’d gotten bored of them by the time I got round and instead having to play something like Resident Evil 3… which scared me.
And if the stars aligned and I could play those games, then I’d have max-one-hour to master the controls and get some good game time in before dinner was on, we did something else, or I had to go home. It was stressful being a Spyro-less kid.
But now that I’m a sexy adult with a job and my own personal issues that I’m too scared to tackle head-on, I can buy my own video games to distract myself and, if only briefly, trick me into thinking I’m a child again.
That’s why a few months back I got on eBay and bought myself a PlayStation 1 with Spyro, Crash Bandicoot and various other games for the low-low price of around £100. I can finally play these games if and when I want to! And I know what you’re thinking; “Alfie, that’s a lot of money to spend on a whim just to prove a point” and I agree, but as my granddad always said “you don’t need to eat when you’re playing nostalgia-driven video games from the 90s and early noughties”. He was an odd man. The games wouldn’t have even been nostalgic when he said that, they’d have just been a bit old.
But then obviously two very annoying things happened to burst my bubble; firstly, I don’t really have time to play video games if and when I want to, and secondly, Crash Bandicoot got remastered for PS4 and I could have bought an objectively better version of the Playstation 1 version I have for a fifth of the price.
Now that’s happening to Spyro. Yay…
News outlet Kotaku has it that ‘multiple sources familiar with the project’ are set to remaster the dragon game trilogy of Spyro the Dragon, Ripto’s Rage! and Year of the Dragon. Along with that, the source states that the new game will likely feature content cut from the original games.

As you might suspect, the game will be totally remastered, with better graphics, sound effects and more, and if that’s not enough to get you excited, then nothing is.
According to Kotaku, Activision will formally announce the game come March, with it expected to roll out in September, which would fall nicely into the 20 year anniversary of the original game.
20 years. Christ.
At first, all new Spyro will be available on PlayStation 4, before rolling out onto other platforms.
