It Looks Like Pixar Is Making A Sequel To 'A Bug's Life'

My memories of A Bug’s Life are pretty hazy. I remember numerous ants – that were for some reason blue – some pretty intimidating grasshoppers, and a rather fat caterpillar whose colour-scheme and shape reminded me of an ice-lolly.

Apart from that, the details of the plot kind of escape me.

The animated film, which was originally based on Aesop’s fable ‘The Ant and the Grasshopper’, was released in 1998 and instantly became a classic.

After having a little dig, I rediscovered that the plot followed the life of misfit ant ‘Flik’ who ends up recruiting an inept bug circus troupe (it’s a thing) in order to protect his colony from some evil grasshoppers.

Here’s the trailer:

With a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and a fond – if distant – place in people’s hearts, A Bug’s Life was hailed as a fast-moving and energetic adventure that featured protagonists we as viewers could really route for.

Plus, while it might be hard to believe it looking back, A Bug’s Life was also a technological innovation, demonstrating cutting edge animation techniques. Oh how far we’ve come…

Suggesting that the adventures of Flik, Dot, and Hopper might become more than a distant memory is the fact that Pixar may be producing a sequel to the film.

Posting a cryptic tweet of a still of Dot from the film with the message “Try a new perspective”, fans of the bug animation suddenly pricked their ears up.

A “new perspective”…. as in, a new film??? Perhaps from Dot’s viewpoint?

Although this is all we have to go on at the moment, it wouldn’t be completely out of the blue for Pixar to be working on a sequel of A Bug’s Life considering that they’re currently in the motions of producing The Incredibles 2 and Toy Story 4.

Toy Story, released a few years before A Bug’s Life, has ended up with three sequels, so it only seems fair that the latter should also get a share of the pie.

There’s certainly sufficient demand…

Fingers crossed.
