11 Movie Sequels That Have Already Been Announced For 2019
We can moan all we want about film franchises sucking the fun out of original concepts by producing a million and one sequels, but we know full well that as soon as said-sequels are announced our hearts start beating that little bit faster.
But then we have to deal with all the ‘will they, won’t they’ drama that accompanies big flicks getting an extra instalment. Writers and directors sign up and drop out, iconic cast members say they’re not going to contribute, and the possibility of said-film seems to get slimmer and slimmer…
However, here are 11 film sequels that have been announced for next year:
The Lego Movie Sequel
After the success of the first Lego Movie (96% on Rotten Tomatoes), 2019 will see a sequel. Suggesting that the story (written again by Christopher Lloyd and Phil Miller) is going to be much more topical than the original is the fact that it will explore gender issues, and the differences in how boys and girls play.
It’ll apparently take place a few years after the first movie, with Mike Mitchell (Shrek Forever After, Trolls) directing. We’re just hoping there’ll be another song as catchy as ‘Everything Is Awesome’.
How To Train Your Dragon 3
The third and final How To Train Your Dragon movie will focus on Hiccup fulfilling his dream of creating a peaceful dragon utopia. However, his reign as village chief is tested when danger mounts at home. Both dragon and rider must make difficult decisions in order to save their kind.
Written by Dean DeBlois (Lilo & Stitch), How To Train Your Dragon 3 will star Jay Barauchel (The Is the End), Gerard Butler (Reign of Fire), Craig Ferguson (Celebrity Name Game), America Ferrera (Ugly Betty), and Jonah Hill (The Wolf of Wall Street).
The film is due to be released in 2019.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters
The 35th (yep, 35th) addition to the Godzilla franchise, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, is the third Godzilla film to be produced by a Hollywood studio.
The plot will follow the efforts of the crypto-zoological agency ‘Monarch’ as they struggle to face off a myriad of god-sized monsters, including – of course – the mighty Godzilla.
Not only will we see Godzilla collide with his ultimate nemesis, King Ghidorah, but as these ancient super-species start to rise, humanity’s very existence will hang in the balance…
Starring Vera Farmiga (The Conjuring), Ken Watanabe (Transformers: Age of Extinction), Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine), and Kyle Chandler (Zero Dark Thirty), the film is due to be released in March of next year.
The New Mutants
Despite some of the most recent X-Men films falling a little short of fans’ expectations, the franchise is certainly in very rude health overall – a fact that has prompted numerous spin-offs, sequels, and prequels.
The New Mutants (due to be released in February, 2019), will be the thirteenth instalment in the franchise, and will see a group of young mutants being held in a secret facility fight to try and save themselves.
The New Mutants has been receiving a fair bit of hype, namely because Game of Thrones’ Maisie Williams – who plays Arya on the show – will be starring as Rahne Sinclair (Wolfsbane).
Bad Boys for Life
The third addition to the Bad Boys franchise, Bad Boys for Life very nearly didn’t happen, with star detective Martin Lawrence claiming in August 2017 that he “doubts the film will ever be made”.
Even so, it seems that the third instalment is once again back on the cards, with Will Smith telling a breakfast show that the film was coming “very soon”.
Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, who are behind films such as Gangsta and Snowfall are said to be in negotiations to direct the film, with a potential production date of August 2018.
Toy Story 4
Just when we thought that Toy Story had come to a close with the brilliant and emotional Toy Story 3, Pixar started our hearts again with the news that they would be developing a fourth addition to the franchise.
However, when Rashida Jones dropped out of writing Toy Story 4, we admit that we were a little worried, but now that Stephany Folsom (Thor: Ragnarok) has replaced her, we’re feeling more than confident that Tory Story 4 will keep the magic of the first three films very much alive.
The plot will centre around Bo Beep – who was missing from the third film – with Woody and Buzz trying to find her in order to bring her home.
Men in Black 4
Considering it’s been more than five years since Men in Black 3 was released, fans of the franchise have definitely been hankering for some alien-action.
However, Men in Black 4 will reportedly not feature the classic combination of Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones and will instead be a spin-off introducing new, younger characters.
We don’t have a release date or any plot details, but no doubt the fourth film will include some pretty cutting one-liners.
The Secret Life of Pets 2
The Secret Life of Pets (2016) was an animated comedy that followed all the antics that pets get up to when their owners aren’t at home – a concept that managed to reward the film with a 74% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The sequel, due to be released in June, 2019, will reportedly begin three years after the events of the first film.
While it was looking like Louis C.K. would be involved with the project, he was dropped by Universal, Illumination after his admission to committing numerous sexual assaults.
Top Gun 2
A sequel to 80s flyboy classic, Top Gun, has been in the pipe-lines for a wee while now.
Thankfully, Tom Cruise will be reprising his role as Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell in Top Gun 2, but things don’t look so good for his wingman Nick ‘Goose’ Bradshaw who met his demise in the original film.
Instead, it’s thought that Top Gun 2 will feature Goose’s son, Riot, who will apparently be mentored by Mitchell – a relationship that has been described as “antagonistic”.
Despite the fact that since 2013 we’ve never truly got ‘Let it Go’ out of our heads, Disney will yet again be providing us with catchy tunes and uplifting plots with Frozen 2.
The sequel to the smash-hit that featured Elsa (Idina Menzel) and Anna (Kristen Bell) will reportedly star all of our favourite characters from the original – including Olaf, who will reportedly get a girlfriend.
Frozen 2 is due to be released in November, 2019.
Star Wars Episode IX
Star Wars Episode IX will be the conclusion of the new Star Wars trilogy, and will be directed by J.J. Abrams, with Chris Terrio signing up to write.
The third and final instalment is due to be released in December, 2019, having been pushed back following the death of Carrie Fisher, who’s character Leia was due to play a large part in the film.
Considering the backlash to The Last Jedi, with many fans calling it an abomination, we’re a little sceptical about whether or not Star Wars Episode IX will deliver…
Lots to look forward to.
